Chemical design for Recyclability

  • TITLE: Chemical design for Recyclability

  • HOST: Technische Universiteit Eindhoven (The Netherlands)

  • MAIN SUPERVISOR: Prof. dr. Jaap Den Doelder (TUE)

  • CO-SUPERVISOR: Prof. dr. Kim Ragaert (UG)

  • START DATE: 01.05.2020

  • DURATION: 36 months + 12 months (internal funding)

  • REQUIRED DEGREE: MSc. in a field such as Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Polymer Science, Applied Physics

  • REQUIRED SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS: Technical knowledge of polymers, experimental and modeling skills, structure-property relations, polymer processing

  • DESCRIPTION: Multilayer packaging structures are excellent in delivering package functionality. Due to the use of multiple materials, they are typically hard to recycle. All-polyolefin multilayer packages are being considered as recyclable alternatives. You will study current systems, analyze and design alternatives, study the performance in prototypes and in real packages, and asses the recyclability. This will be done via modeling and experimental work focusing on rheological and mechanical properties.

  • OBJECTIVES: To develop an easy-to-recycle functional multilayered packaging, with all layers being polyolefins.

  • PLANNED SECONDMENTS: Dow Benelux Packaging & Specialty Plastics R&D department for tailored characterization of selected polyolefin structures (M12-M16). UG for processing of different newly designed polyolefins into multilayered structures + experimental validation of properties, including recyclability (M16-M28)

  • CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

    • TU/e supplements the duration of employment from 36 months to 48 months.

    • A full-time appointment for a period of 4 years at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e), with an intermediate evaluation after nine months;

    • Gross monthly salary from € 2.325 (first year) to € 2.972 per month (last year)

    • An attractive package of fringe benefits, including holiday and end-of-year allowance, a personal development program for PhD students (PROOF program), and excellent sport facilities.
